Commissioners Held Routine Weekly Meeting

Tax Sale This Wednesday, Dec. 17

Greenwood County Commissioners held a short business meeting on Monday, Dec. 15, where they discussed routine business, including the upcoming tax sale slated for this Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Counselor Paul Dean shared that two properties, within the City of Eureka, on this week’s tax sale also have orders to be demolished; however, work is not expected to be completed prior to Wednesday. Dean noted that he will make statements as needed to note those orders before the sale of those properties. Commissioner Preston Evenson stated he would like to see tax sales be held annually, with Counselor Dean noting that is the plan moving forward.

The tax sale will begin at 10 a.m. this Wednesday at Memorial Hall, located at 309 N. Oak St., in Eureka.

To be eligible to bid, all taxes must be paid and pre-registration is required. Same-day registration will not be accepted.

A complete listing of the properties being sold at the public auction can be found in the Oct. 29. Nov. 5 and Nov. 12 editions of The Eureka Herald.

During the road and bridge report, Administrative Assistant Kassie Lazar shared the trailer, approved at a prior meeting, should be in this week. The commission had approved up to $40,000 for a trailer, with the department acquiring a trailer from Berry Trailer at a cost of $34,000.

County Fire Chief Glen Collinge presented an invoice from Feld Fire for testing done on Self-Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBA) or air packs for county departments. Chief Collinge noted that approximately 35 of the county’s total 48 were tested, as Madison’s unit recently underwent testing. The commission approved to pay the invoice, totaling $5,951.58.

The commission also approved hiring Alexis Schlotterbeck to complete county fire run reports at $20 per hour. It is estimated that she will spend approximately two hours a month completing the reports.

EMS Director Brian Mongeau also presented a new employee for approval, noting that he has hired Nathan Head as a fulltime EMT beginning Jan. 2, 2026, at the entry-level EMT pay of $16.20 per hour. Mongeau also shared that an ambulance had an issue while responding to a call on Sunday evening. The issue is believed to be minor, with repairs expected to be completed this week. Crews were later disregarded from the call as an accident didn’t occur.

During the clerk’s agenda, Chair Mac Obourn shared an invoice for the annual membership renewal for the Kansas Natural Resource Coalition (KNRC). The renewal will be included with next week’s payables.

Amanda Cunningham with CrossWinds Counseling & Wellness shared a year-end review with the commission. She stated that CrossWinds has served 333 residents of Greenwood County through 7,000 various services.

The commission held two executive sessions for five minutes each for personnel matters. The justification for both sessions was employee-employer issues. The first session included Clerk Deann McCaffree and County Counselor Paul Dean. The second was with the commission and Dean. No action was taken after either session.

The treasurer’s report was reviewed.

The Dec. 8 meeting minutes and the special payables for Dec. 15, totaling $2,308.82, were approved as presented.

Commissioner Roy Ballard was absent from the meeting.

The commission will next meet on Monday, Dec. 22, at 9 a.m., where they will participate in an Ugly Sweater competition. The courthouse will be closed next Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 24 and 25, for Christmas.
