Eureka Basketball Placed Sixth Yates Center Tournament

The Eureka High School boys lost to the Sedan Blue Devils Tuesday, Dec. 9 to open the Yates Center Wildcat Winter Classic Tournament. As in their previous game on Friday, Dec. 5 against the Blue Devils, the Tornadoes continued to struggle with Sedan’s quickness, committing 28 turnovers.

Again, as in last Friday’s game, the Tornadoes fought throughout the night before finally losing 55-62.

The decisive factor in such a close game was the 28 lost possessions due to turnovers and the fact that the Blue Devils went to the line 34 times while the Tornadoes made only nine attempts from the stripe. This disparity is a reflection of the foul trouble the Tornadoes were in most of the night due to Sedan’s athleticism.

Junior Tyson Coon led with 15 points. Sophomore Brody Mitchell added 11, Senior J.P. Guillaume had 9, senior Cole Ptacek had 6, juniors Kotah Davis and Cooper Roberson had 5 each. Freshman Wacey Ross had 2 points and senior Davian Damron added a free throw to complete the scoring for the Tornadoes.

In the second game of the tournament, the Tornadoes got their first win of the season, defeating the Bluestem Lions 56-33. After a tight first half, in which the Tornadoes held a 21-18 lead at halftime, the Tornadoes exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Lions 17-3 to take a commanding lead into the final frame. The game featured good defense by the Tornadoes, in which they allowed only 15 second-half points and good free-throw shooting.

The Tornadoes hit 30 of 42 from the charity stripe.

Junior Coon led with 21 points. Sophomore Mitchell added 10, senior Ptacek had 9, junior Davis had 5, seniors J.P. Guillaume and Nate Clark had 4 each. Juniors Luc Guillaume with 3 and Roberson with 1 rounded out the scoring.

The Tornadoes lost the third game of the tournament to the Madison Bulldogs 39-53. It was a hardfought game throughout the first three quarters until Madison pulled away at the end. The Tornadoes actually led by one at halftime due to a half-court buzzer beater by Ptacek, kept that momentum for the first half of the third quarter, but gradually got beat by Madison’s post players, especially as Eureka’s Brody Mitchell was in foul trouble for the second half.

Once again, junior Coon led the team in scoring with 15 points. Ptacek had 13 and Davis added 9. Mitchell ended his night with 2.
