Election And Superintendent Search Updates Shared With USD 389 Board

Updates were shared regarding the recent general election and the ongoing superintendent search during a special Eureka USD 389 Board of Education meeting on Monday, Nov. 24.

Board Clerk Tammi Burtin started the meeting by sharing an update regarding the recent general election, as the board had three positions on the November ticket. Clerk Burtin noted that Positions 4 and 5 were strictly write-in votes, as no one had filed for those positions. In Position 4, Anthony Treece won the election and will take the oath of office at the January meeting, along with incumbent board President Brian Mongeau, who was re-elected for Position 6. For Position 5, Burtin noted that after speaking with the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB) and the Secretary of State’s Office that the position will remain open as Matt Winn received the most write-in votes but wasn’t eligible to serve in that position due to not residing within that position’s boundaries. The position doesn’t automatically go to the next person; but rather becomes open as of the January meeting. The Eureka USD 389 board will then seek applicants interested in serving on the board. Additional details will be shared following the January meeting.

The remainder of the meeting was for review of the upcoming superintendent search materials with Alma Henry with KASB. Henry presented a timeline and checklist, noting that the next several months will be filled with special meetings as they work to find the next superintendent for Eureka USD 389, following the retirement of Superintendent Scott Hoyt. Henry shared that the position has been posted and noted that interest in the position is there. However, Henry did note that the State of Kansas currently has 35 open superintendent positions. Completed applications for the Eureka position are due by Jan. 19, 2026. Although the candidate may be able to shadow Superintendent Hoyt, the official start date will be July 1, 2026.

Several special meetings are expected to be held by the board in the coming months.

Their next scheduled meeting is Monday, Dec. 8, at 6 p.m., at the board office.
