S&L Hardware Located At 1518 E. River St. Deemed A Total Loss

The community is rallying behind community business owners Shane and Lisa Schweda after S&L Hardware was deemed a total loss after a structure fire on Saturday, Nov. 22.

The fire happened just hours after they closed at noon on Saturday and quickly spread throughout the building.

According to the Eureka Fire Department, crews responded to the blaze at 3:52 p.m. and were on scene at 1518 E. River St., in just three minutes. Crews encountered heavy fire and smoke conditions, upon arrival.

Crews were able to make entry into the structure and quickly extinguish the fire. The business suffered smoke, heat and water damage. The cause of the fire was investigated by the State Fire Marshall’s office, and is believed to be electrical in nature.

Fire Chief Luke Westerman stated, “Our first arriving crew members were able to make entry into the structure, locate the fire, and quickly extinguish it before the fire extended to other portions of the structure.” The fire was listed as under control at 4:15 p.m.

Other responding agencies included Greenwood County Fire Department - Central Division, Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, Greenwood County EMS, Evergy, ATMOS, and the American Red Cross.

As the fire began to expand within the facility, many residents shared they felt and heard explosions in the area of S&L Hardware. It is believed that those were caused by the ammunition and aerosol paint cans exploding.
