Songs Of The Flint Hills

Songs Of The Flint Hills

Poems & lyrics celebrating Kansas Flint Hills land & people by Annie Wilson – the “Flint Hills Balladeer”

My Little Prairie Dog First I saw your big brown eyes Staring through the bars.

Your shivering stance and tucked-in tail Were signs of deeper scars.

They told me in a few days That you would meet your end. The time had nearly run out For you to find a friend.

I let you smell my fingers Then took you in my arms To a blanket in the pickup cab And on out to the farm.

You couldn’t tell your story But I know that it was rough.

It took you several weeks before You’d let me have your trust.

Now you’re my sweet companion Out on the porch at night, Beneath the constellations, We listen to the quiet.

I never do my chores alone; You beat me to the barn.

You’re right beside me all day long Just like my lucky charm.

Each time we walk the pastures, I feel the joy you feel.

I love to watch you bounding up And down the rocky hills.

Running free out on the prairie I know is good for you, And being there beside you Makes me happy, too.

Now you’re my little prairie dog; You chase away my blues.

People say I rescued you But I’m not sure - who rescued who!
