With hopes of many assisting others when they can, the Greenwood County Health Department installed a “Blessing Box” at their facility, located at 200 W. 1st Street, in Eureka.

The goal of the new feature is to simply provide a small outdoor cabinet stocked with items to assist local residents with nonperishable food, hygiene items, and other essentials that anyone can take or contribute to anonymously.

Staff members encourage the community to “Take what you need and leave what you can.” They also suggest that bulk items be broken down into individual items (i.e., a six-pack of canned chicken should be removed from the packaging and left as six separate cans). Suggested donations include canned goods, boxed meals, peanut butter, hygiene products, diapers, socks, and bottled water. Items that can withstand temperature changes are best. Perishable foods, opened packages, or expired items should not be placed in the box.

Greenwood County Health Director Jayme Lewis also shared that a special Facebook page has been created for comm un i t y members to follow. This page will allow community members to post specific needs while others can watch to provide those specific items. The page can be found at “Greenwood County Blessing Box.”

Community members are invited to visit, contribute and help keep the supplemental box stocked to help bless fellow community members in times of need. “Neighbors helping neighbors is truly the hope of this,” stated Lewis.

The community is also welcome to stop by the 24/7 informa tion station that was installed earlier this year at the health department.

This quarter, the station features information regarding the Veterans Operation Green Light.
