And now we have jumped right into winter weather! I know it’s that time of year, but why can’t we have an actual Autumn? It would be nice to go from the heat we were having, to cooler weather then gradually get colder. Starting the week with a temp of 27 degrees is not what I’d call Fall like weather.

What is an “antimetabole”?

We offer our sympathy to the family and friends of Joey Caylor III. We offer our sympathy to all others who lost loved ones this past week. May they all rest in peace.

Hello to all in area nursing and assisted living facilities. Hello also to all in area hospitals and rehab centers.

Happy Veterans Day to all the veterans out there. Without your sacrifices, we wouldn’t be enjoying most of the things we enjoy today. God bless all of our veterans and their families.

Social media and other online platforms have caused the death of yet another well-known publication, the Farmers Almanac will cease publication after the 2026 edition comes out, after a 208-year run. It’s a shame, but the “Old Farmer’s Almanac” is still being published, for now. Farmers Almanac was printed in Maine and Old Farmer’s Almanac is printed in New Hampshire.

Being able to get things online is ok, but many people still prefer holding a book and turning pages or holding a newspaper and hearing the paper crinkle as you turn the pages. There’s just something about holding a paper in your hands and hearing the rustle, smelling the ink and seeing the ink on your fingertips. You don’t get that with digital platforms.

Answer: An antimetabole is a rhetorical device in which words are repeated in successive clauses but in reverse order, such as the proverbs like: “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” A very famous saying of John F. Kennedy.

Halloween night, on the CBS evening news, they had a news report about Independence and their annual “Neewollah” festivities, that is now a week plus of events. We haven’t been for years. Do you go? Back when I was in school, the junior high and high school band marched in the big parade. It was a long parade, something like two miles, then we got to attend the carnival and have fun.

Went shopping Halloween day, and I couldn’t believe they not only had Halloween, Fall decor and Thanksgiving stuff out, they also had Christmas stuff out already! Why are they rushing the seasons? I guess every store wants to be the first one to put out the Christmas stuff and get the early bird shoppers.

And, speaking of Christmas, we got a ‘Monkey Ward’ catalog in the mail Saturday. It was a whopping 80 pages. Remember when just the toy section of any major catalog was 80 pages or more?

We have a food pantry in town now. It’s in the building owned by Patrick Kennedy where he had his “Kayaks and More” store. The pantry is in the back of the building. You can pull into the alley and pull up next to the handicap ramp and go in the back door. Look for more information about the Food Bank in next week’s paper.

Unofficial winners of the recent election are Mayor Randy Schomaker, Chad Altis and Robert Bury were elected to the city council, and Belinda Dyer and Toni O’Hare were elected to the Southwind Extension District Executive Board.

I was asked, prior to the election, who I thought would win the election. I looked at the person, thought for a second or two and answered, “Whoever gets the most votes.” The person who asked me the question said, “Well, I guess you’re right.” I don’t think that was the expected answer.
