Toronto News

Trunk or Treat was cancelled last Saturday due to the inclement weather. In past years, it was held at the Toronto Gym when the weather was bad, but the Gym is currently without bathrooms so it couldn’t be held there.

I didn’t hear anything about a different date, so hopefully all the kids will be out and about Friday night for Trick or Treating. We will have our porch light on, eagerly awaiting for the ghosts, goblins and other scary creatures to stop by.

What was once the funniest competitive sport?

Hello to all in area nursing and assisted living facilities. Hello also to all in area hospitals and rehab centers.

We offer our sympathy to the family and friends of Tammie Sievers. We offer our sympathy to all others who lost loved ones this past week. May they all rest in peace.

Have you been lucky enough to see the Monarch butterflies as they are migrating South for the winter? People lucky enough to have flowers in their yards have got to see them. I had some butterfly bushes in a tub in my backyard last year. I transplanted them to a nice spot next to the house this past Spring and thought they had taken root and were doing fine until one morning I looked at them and something had dug them up and chewed up the roots!

I have some bulbs to plant this fall, but I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep the rodents out of them. Any suggestions? I’m trying hard to make my yard pollinator friendly, but the wildlife seems to be against me.

Answer: “Pedestrianism.” March 10, 1879, the arena at Gilmore’s Garden in New York City (later renamed Madison Square Garden) was absolutely packed with screaming fans of America’s latest sports craze: pedestrianism. Where competitors had to walk around 1/8 mile track for six days straight to reach 450 miles!

They could not leave the track so tents, bathrooms and tables of food were set up on the track. I can’t even imagine watching that event. Can you?

And to think, while scrolling through the channels the other day we came across ‘Pillow Fighting Championships,’ and thought that was an odd competition. Can’t help but wonder who comes up with these crazy ideas.

We heard a really loud “boom” Saturday afternoon. It wasn’t a sonic boom, but I don’t know for sure what it was. Several trees came down Saturday also, but that wasn’t the noise either.

Daylight Saving Time ends Saturday night. Fall back one hour. Set your clocks back before you go to bed so you don’t arrive at church Sunday morning an hour early wondering where everyone is.
