Susannah French Putney Chapter DAR -

The regular monthly meeting of the Susannah French Putney Chapter of DAR was held on Sept. 19, at the Butler County Historical Museum in El Dorado, at 1 p.m.

After a call to order, Chapter Chaplain Ann Wimberly read a poem written by Mrs. Kirkpatrick, one of the founding members of the Chapter. The chapter was formed in 1910, 115 years ago, and through the club’s meetings, they are recognizing the group’s founding this year.

The members present read the Preamble to the Constitution, the DAR ritual, the Pledge of Allegiance, and then sang the National Anthem. Members also sang “My Country Tis of Thee” in honor of the founders, who sang this at some of their early meetings. Roll call was to say the name of your patriot and where he lived.

To commemorate the signing of the Constitution in September 1787, members from both the Eureka area and the El Dorado area attended the signing of the mayor’s declaration, marking Sept. 17 as Constitution Day. Also, posters were placed in Eureka, El Dorado, and Cottonwood Falls for Constitution Day. As of 2004, a law was passed stating that all schools receiving federal funding provide educational programs on or around September 17th.

In October, the members are invited to go to the William Allen White Home in Emporia. A guided tour of the residence will be followed by lunch.

Member Sigrid Denchfield displayed many of her creations, including placemats, decorated towels, and coasters, all decorated by her sewing skills. The items will be part of a raffle celebrating our country’s 250th anniversary on July 4, 2026. There is also a wall hanging featuring an eagle with red, white, and blue designs that will also be at the raffle. The hanging is titled “The Eagle will Fly” and could be a very nice addition to anyone’s home.

There was also a drawing for some door prizes. Those prizes were well received.

After the meeting, two groups of members prepared snacks and cookies to distribute to EMS personnel in Butler and Greenwood counties as part of the group’s community service. The cookies were made by the members for a previous event.

Members who attended included: Teresa Bachman, Sue Ann Brown, Kay Catlin, Carla Cook, Denchfield, Patty Goedecke, Janet Green, Jean Groendes, Loria Howard, Deborah Keplar, Connie Mitchell, Sheryl Moody, Kathleen Morrow, Rise Russin, Marsha Todd, Nita Whiteman and Wimberly.
