The West Elk Patriot football team hosted the Blue Devils of Sedan on Friday, Oct. 10 for their Homecoming game.
West Elk lost the game 1256. “I felt we were prepared and for the most part played pretty well in the first half before the game got away from us in the 2nd half,” stated head coach Ian Denton. “We had two drives inside their 10-yard line but couldn’t convert them into touchdowns and allowed Sedan to keep the lead and eventually pull away. I’m proud of the boys’ effort and preparation this past week and despite the outcome of the game, we got better,” he stated.
The Patriots had 40 rushes for 129 yards and were successful on 11 passes for 112 yards. West Elk freshman Ryatt Griesel recorded 4 carries for 73 yards. Leading the Patriots in receptions wwas Trace Toon, who caught 4 passes for 67 yards and Brycen Hobbs who caught 3 passes for 27 yards.
Defensively, the Patriots were lead by sophomore Welch Murphy who recorded 7 solo and 2 assisted tackles; senior Trace Toon 1 solo and 4 assisted tackles and junior Landon Wunderlich 5 solo tackles. Toon and Roman Moreno each recovered fumbles for the Patriots.
Scoring touchdowns for the Patriots were Griesel and Jaxon Bogdahn.
West Elk will host Northeast Arma for their Senior Night event, on Friday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m.
“Arma will be another good test for our team. They have a new coach and system and have been improved over last year. We need to take the positives from the Sedan game and build off them. If we have another good week of practice and stay focused on improving as individuals and as a team, we will give ourselves a chance on Friday,” stated Denton.
