The “Question of the Week” for last week was: “What is holding you back from volunteering in your community?”
Following are the responses: Tiffany Milner* - “First, Posting more than “volunteers needed” is essential, what exactly are you needing, how many? Having 15 people show up for two jobs is wasteful of everyone’s time. Second, volunteerism is like a job, a high turn over rate and/or low show up through an organization shows that volunteers do not feel welcomed and valued for their time and energy - word also spreads. The groups I’ve felt needed and valued, I gave my heart and time to continually because I feel like I am making a difference. That is after all the point of volunteering, to make a difference. If that aspect is not present, people will not want to help.”
Amanda Cook* - “This is a great question, which leads to another question.
How does one find out more about volunteer opportunities in the area? I am newer to the area and am interested in learning more.
Thanks!”
Megan Renee Gudde* “Not knowing about things until they are happening or that someone is needing volunteers. *reach out to me if anyone is needing volunteers. Willing to help out where I can!”
Matthew Wilson* “Age-related lack of energy” Kim Rogers* - “Never in town.”
Tami J. Hart-Jackson* - “I know many who volunteer and some who hold back due to feeling unwelcome, I think a community committee with a clear volunteer structure and regular fundraising events could really help people feel more included and valued, and make volunteering more accessible to everyone. The funds raised would be placed in an account for those in need to apply for.”
Donna Satterfield Drake* - “Tami J. Hart-Jackson Thanks for saying that Tami the key is feeling welcome and treated like a fellow worker” Toni Bills Harryman* “People show up and work hard while others show up to sit and watch and it’s the sitters talk about how bad the people are who are working.”
Msrjorie Morgan* “Overwhelming what needs done” Susan Epperson* “Don’t know who needs help.”
Amanda Linton* - “My experience with volunteering in the community has not been great other than friendship meals. The lack of organization and communication are what hold me back. There are a few organizations I volunteered for and was brushed off. It almost felt like “we only want the volunteers WE want.”’ Cindy Jones-Williams* “Amanda Linton I ran into the same thing so don’t feel bad.”
Freddy Stuber* - “I do! It’s a very small cow town!” Do you have recommendation for the “Question of the Week” please send it to Robin at news@eurekaherald. com, or stop by 822 E. River St., Ste 100.
