Eureka JH Football Defeated Fredonia

The Eureka Junior High Tornadoes won their second game in three tries Thursday night, defeating the Fredonia Junior High Yellowjackets 22-8 in Fredonia.

Eureka won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff, which they drove down the field for a touchdown run by 8th grader Felix Neill from 12 yards out. That play was set up by a 45-yard scamper by 8th grade quarterback Cord Adkins on the previous play. The conversion, a pass from Adkins to 8th grade receiver Brandon Cornett, was successful and Eureka had an 8-0 lead.

The next several possessions featured stout defense by both teams, as neither was able to move the ball consistently. Cornett ended one Yellowjacket drive with an interception, giving the Tornadoes one more shot at the endzone before halftime. Adkins hit 8th grader Marcus Pearce on a 24-yard dart that made the score 14-0. The conversion failed and the half ended.

The second half began with Fredonia receiving the ball and driving the field for a touchdown, followed by a successful conversion. Suddenly, the lead the Tornadoes had built did not look safe anymore, as Fredonia had closed it to 6 points. The Tornadoes followed that Fredonia drive with one of their own that resulted in another touchdown, this one on a 37-yard pass from Adkins to 8th grader Gavin Gonzalez. The successful conversion, an Adkins run, made the score 22-8.

Again, the next several possessions by both sides were ended by good defense or self-inflicted mistakes. The game ended with Fredonia trying a desperate play that almost succeeded but ultimately failed when it was stopped by a saving tackle by 7th grader Jessn Ogden. Eureka is now 2-1 and will face Humboldt at home Thursday night.
