Former Eureka resident, John Mock, will celebrate his 100th birthday on Thursday, Sept. 18.
Mock was born and raised in Eureka. He was drafted into the Army in 1943. His first boot camp was in Texas, and, while there, he was placed in Communications.
Mock was stationed in Europe and was taken hostage by the German Army. He was only 19 years old when he became a Prisoner Of War (POW). He was a POW for more than three months.
Corporal Mock has been awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, ETO Ribbon with 3 Battle Stars, American Defense Service Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and most recently the Herb Duncan “Can Do Attitude” Distinguished Veteran Award. A special celebration will be held on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 2 p.m., at the VA Nursing Home, in Winfield. Those able to attend are asked to meet at Tractor Supply in Eureka at 11:30 a.m. on the 18th and convoy to Winfield. A card shower has also been requested. Cards may be sent to John H.
