Chemical Sale Hours To Change To Afternoon At Noxious Weed Department

After hearing a request from Noxious Weed Director Randy Knight, the Greenwood County Commission approved changing the chemical sale hours to the afternoon, during their routine weekly meeting on Monday of this week. Discussion on the matter was held during a prior meeting when Knight noted that optimum spray time is in the morning and suggested the change in hours to afford staff the ability to spray in the morning rather than the afternoon. The commission approve to change the Noxious Weed Department’s chemical sales hours from the morning hours to 1-4 p.m., Monday-Thursday. The change will go into effect next Monday, July 7.

The majority of the meeting was filled with discussion between the commissioners and Road and Bridge Supervisor Allen Greenwood. Greenwood shared a quote with the commission for repairs for the bridge over Little Salt Creek on BB75 (south of Highway 400 near Fall River). Greenwood noted that the wingwall is 35 feet in length, but is on its side. The bridge is currently under mitigation from a flood that occurred in April 2024. The commission wanted to hear from Engineer Michael Marris before moving forward.

Greenwood also presented a quote for barricades from National Sign Company, Inc., totaling $6,080, for 10 8-foot type III barricade units with steel uprights and feet at $3,280 and 100 36” orange traffic cones with reflective collars and black bases at $2,800. The commission approved the purchase.

The commission approved to hire Mary Cathell, at $19/ hour as a full-time grader operator, effective July 1.

The commission approved the tier system for Road and Bridge employees as previously presented by Greenwood.

Discussion was held regarding various bridges and approaches throughout the county. It was noted that some wing walls were in need of repairs and if not repaired, the structural integrity of area bridges could be at risk. Commissioners plan to meet with township officials to ensure approaches are maintained.

Knight also presented the budget for the Household Hazardous Waste department.

A four-year term contract, in the form of Resolution 2025-38, was approved re-appointing county apment praiser Shawna Griffitts.

A 10-minute executive session for personnel matters, pertaining to an employee status change, was held with Greenwood and County Counselor Paul Dean and Administrative Assistant Kassie Lazar via telephone. After returning to open session, the commission approved to move John Plonka from part-time to full-time, at the same rate ($17/hour).

The June 23 meeting minutes and special payables for June 30, totaling $5,905.23, were approved as presented.

It was noted that the auditor will be at the July 7 meeting for a budget work session.

The next Greenwood County Commission meeting is scheduled for Monday, July 7, at 9 a.m., in the commission meeting room at the courthouse.
