Hamilton City Library Hosting ‘Coloring Our World’ Summer Learning

The Coloring Our World Summer Learning (formerly Reading) at the Hamilton City Library (HCL) kicked off its Program for kids ages birth – 12 years old on June 6 from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. with “Color Our World with HEROES.” Parents and Grandparents are welcome. After meeting at the library, the children, parents, grandparents and library staff walked outside and met Charlie Schlotterbeck, Hamilton Fire Chief, and Matt Mettling, School Resource Officer from the Greenwood County Sheriff’s Office, who told the kids what their jobs consisted of on a daily basis. A couple of books, “Officer Glory” and “Not All Princesses Dress in Pink,” were read by the Heroes. The kids got to see “up close and personal” a fire truck and a Sheriff’s Office vehicle. After a craft and snacks the kids checked out books to read this summer so they could receive prizes at the end of the summer program. June 13 was Week Two and Keila Sherman, former library director and former board member of the Hamilton City Library, presented her version of “Color Our World with Photography” to the children. Sherman’s passion for photography was evident in her life from the age of 10 years old to the present day. She told about how she was interested in learning how to take pictures on a camera that had film inside it that had to be processed in a dark room, how she learned in High School at Hamilton about point and shoot, yearbook pictures and F stops in Journalism Class. Most of her photography education came from her own research and trial and error. The kids at Story Time that day, got to take pictures inside and outside the library. They made picture frames and got to take a picture of themselves home after snack time. All are welcome to join the HCL for six-seven more weeks of fun as other guest speakers talk to patrons about “Coloring Our World.” Some of the topics will be food, music, nature, and storytelling by Priscilla Howe. Watch the HCL’s Facebook page for more information and some surprises this summer. The public is invited to attend. They are meeting during June and July from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on every Friday except the 4th of July (That’s a Holiday and the library will be closed). HCL plans to have a 3rd of July Story Time on Thursday from 2:30- 3:30 p.m. when they will “Color Our World with Laughter.” Those attending are asked to bring their favorite joke, riddle, tongue twister and/ read some out of the books at the library.
