Maybe it’s just me, but the skeeters seem to be worse this year. I know all this rain hasn’t helped, but there sure seems to be a lot more than usual.

Answer: Coney Island on June 16, 1884, as was known as ‘The Switchback Railway’ and traveled at a whopping 6 mph! It became so popular that by the turn of the century there were hundreds of roller coasters across the U.S.

Where did you ride your first roller coaster? For me it was at Joyland in Wichita. I loved it. That’s the first thing I wanted to ride whenever we went to an amusement park.

Answer: Shirley Temple! Temple was the preferred choice, but her singing skills were not strong enough so Judy Garland was chosen. And as they say, “The rest is history.”

There was a structure fire on North Washington Street in town on June 5 on the property that was owned by the late Pood and Dolly Kester. A shed east of the house containing tack and bales of hay caught fire.

The Toronto Volunteer Fire Department, as well as Woodson County Rural Fire Department (WCRFD), worked on the fire. Jerry Steinforth, with WCRFD said he could see the flames from his place on Indian Road west of Yates Center.

I saw the flames from my front porch, after hearing sirens come into town, and grabbed my phone and went and got some pictures. Nobody was injured and the donkeys, Thelma and Louise, are safe. They were scared and confused but not hurt.
