Here Come The Brides Of Greenwood County

With bridal dresses from the late 1800s to now, the Greenwood County Historical Society Museum is celebrating the brides and grooms of Greenwood County with a new display opening June 2 and continuing through mid-July.

Every corner of the county is represented with dresses and other items reflecting the history and lives of the brides and their families. This display demonstrates the strength, resilience, determination and sometimes tragedy of the people of Greenwood County.

Special vignettes include a three-generation group, mothers and daughters, daughter and grandmother, as well as many other brides who have a close connection to Greenwood County.

More than 25 bridal gowns are featured in this extraordinary display, bringing back memories of those no longer with us as well as those who are living and working and rearing their families today.

On display are ten bridal dresses which have been donated to the Museum, dating back to 1880. Brides from this period did not always wear white on their wedding day. Come in and see a cobalt blue wedding dress!

Nineteen bridal gowns have been loaned to the Museum for this special display and we are grateful. Each wedding dress displayed carries its own unique and very special story.

Short bits of information about each bride and groom are listed on the labels and introduce you to the incredible hardships early settlers encountered and the many joys of the modernday brides.

The oldest living bride who graciously loaned her wedding dress was married in 1949!

All are invited to visit the museum in June or July and share the memories of Greenwood County brides!

Greenwood County Historical Society and Museum is located at 120 W. 4th Street, in Eureka. Museum hours are 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Special hours on Eureka Days.
