submitted by Carla Cook, SFP Secretary The regular meeting of the Susannah French Putney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was held on May 16, in El Dorado, at the Butler County Historical Society (BCHS).
Member Kay Catlin presented a Memorial Service for deceased member, Cynthia Lynn Brown Van-Buren. Brown followed in her mother’s footsteps (Mary Brown) by joining the Susannah French Putney DAR Chapter in 2023. Unfortunately, Brown did not have a chance to be actively involved in DAR before passing away from an aggressive form of brain cancer Sept. 22, 2024.
Constitution Minute: Do you know when and why the voting age was lowered from 21 to 18 years of age? The 26th Amendment lowered the national voting age from 21 to 18 in 1971. Among other things, this change was brought about by protests that began in the 1960s and continued into the 1970s emphasizing the discrepancy between the age to be drafted (1821) and the age to be eligible to vote. It did not seem quite fair!
Regent Teresa Bachman presented awards to the following: To the Chapter: 100% participation in the President General’s Project- “Celebrate Stars & Stripes Forever through DAR Service and Friendship;” Service to America Hours equaling 2,121.75 volunteer hours; DAR Library Outreach Committee.
