Fallen Veterans Honored At Memorial Day Service

Since 1968, the VFW Post 2712 has honored fallen Veterans with a special Memorial Day service, as well as (when inclement weather doesn’t interfere) creates an Avenue of Flags at Greenwood Cemetery, in Eureka.

Over the years, volunteers have come together to put up flags for the annual holiday, using flags that have been donated in honor of a fallen Veteran to VFW Post 2712.

This year’s Memorial Day service, held on Monday, brought together members of several local veterans’ organizations— including John C. Reed Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2712, the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans— to pay tribute to their fallen comrades for their valor and sacrifice.

In addition to veterans, community members gathered to remember and honor the service of America’s military men and women, past and present.A total of 13 fallen comrades were recognized at the 2025 Memorial Day service. Those veterans included: William Eugene McDow Sr., Jimmie Wayne Walker, Michael Lee Hays, Larry D. Clark, Marquiss “Mark” Gober, John Henry Rennie, Jim Beitz, William “Gene” Sprague, Gareth Franklin Gilson, John Albert Reed, Robert J. Brookover, Maynard Mitchell and Mike Whittaker.
