Howard City Council

The Howard City Council meets bimonthly on the first and third Mondays of the month. The following report was generated from the official minutes of the May 5 meeting, which were approved during their most recent meeting on May 15.

Mayor Richard Clark called the May 5 meeting to order with Council members Martin Hunter, Derek Cookson, Shilo Crupper and Gary Harrod present. Also present was City Clerk Joanna Hunter. Council member Jerrad Pope arrived moments later.

With plans of having a fireworks display to honor the country’s independence day, the council approved for the Howard Volunteer Fire Department to put on the 2025 Fireworks display at the lake on June 28, with rain date of July 5, with a budget of $4,500 be spent on fireworks. The city will be accepting and requesting donations to cover the expense in the coming weeks.

The council approved the April 1 meeting minutes; payment of city bills $38,617.83, which includes April payroll; and for Clerk J. Hunter to sign the Kansas 811 proxy vote.

The council also approved to purchase of books, bag valves, AED trainer andbackboard for lifeguard training and pool safety, at approximately $727.

Other discussion included: Dogs running at large are becoming a safety issue for residents and will be addressed with citations in the future; Play structure replacement piece options will be presented at a future meeting; Generator at Cox building automatic switch was to be programmed 5/6/25; Commercial business concerns about trash service; Street coldpatch; Sewer lagoon; Properties to receive letters to mow; Pool liner leaks to be addressed by warranty with input from City Attorney if needed; Code compliance to set court dates for owners not responding appropriately to notices; City is accepting donations for Fireworks and for Pool Day sponsors or other donations.

The meeting adjourned at 7:54 p.m.

The next meeting for the Howard City Council is slated for Monday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m.
