Greenwood County History - Bits Of History

“November, 1907: The El Dorado High School team was scheduled for a football game with Eureka, but when they arrived it became known that they were loaded up with several old heads and the game was called off. As-sistant Principal Henderson of Eureka found by phoning to the El Dorado Principal, some of them were not bona fide students, who came with the team without his knowledge and the boys were sent back without a game. In November, 1907 the Missouri Pacific passenger train No. 409, west-bound, due in Eureka at 11:11 p.m. and an east-bound extra freight met in a head-on collision about a mile west of Neal shortly before noon on Sunday. The freight engine was considerably demolished and left the track and the engine pulling the passenger train suffered the loss of the cow-catcher and the front of the boiler was pretty badly shattered. The passenger train had just left the Neal station and had not gained much speed when the freight was sighted and the engineer reversed his engine and jumped. The freight, however, was running too rapidly and was not able to stop. The passengers on the west bound train were considerably shaken up but all escaped with minor injuries. Traffic was delayed until late in the evening but the trains were running as usual Monday morning. The officials are rather reticent as to the cause of the wreck but it was no doubt caused by misinterpretation of orders by one of the train crews.

After a long felt want the traveling public is enjoying the convenience of a new depot at Piedmont in November, 1907. The new building is a frame structure 58 feet long by 18 feet wide divided into three compartments. It is furnished throughout with new furniture. With these improvements the Frisco can handle its traffic in a better manner.

In November, 1907 Eureka playing the kind of football that wins and with a spirit and dash that knows not defeat, the Eureka High School football team defeated the Wichita High School on the latter’s gridiron by a score of 18 to 0. The Sedgwick County aggregation outweighed the local players 20 pounds to the man but the Eureka team went into the game with determination and scored the first touchdown and goal after six minutes of fast work. The Wichita team has been claiming the high school championship of Southwestern Kansas, but when the game ended Saturday evening a new champion had been born.”
