Mrs. Perkins’ Human Growth and Development and Lifespan Development classes stepped up their game on their Early Childhood and Pre-K skills by hosting a Preschool at Eureka Junior/Senior High School (EJSHS). The students began preparing for the experience the first week of February by observing at Marshall Elementary in the Pre-K and Kindergarten classrooms. They observed for two weeks and then began lesson planning, activity planning, planning snack time and everything they would need to do while teaching these amazing future Marshall Elementary students. Following spring break, the students, who are between 3-5 years old, would arrive at EJSHS on each Tuesday and Thursday from March 25 to May 1.
Many stories were read, they practiced their letters, worked on fine motor skills by putting together puzzles, exercised their gross motor skills with activities such as parachute games, and balloon bop! Who can say “no” to Play-Doh!??! Great fun was to be had when the Pre-K kids were able to practice letter writing in shaving cream spread out on the table! Oh, the giggles and the laughter were contagious! Throughout the six-week session, lasting friendships were formed! What started out as both the Pre-K students and some of the high school students needing some time to get to know each other, ended after their time together with high fives, sit next to me and “Hey! Hey! Look at what I can do!”
The EJSHS students helped the Pre-K students make May Day Baskets and a small gift for Mother’s Day! Then, as each of the Pre-K students left that final day to head home, they were given their own May Day Basket to enjoy for themselves!
