New Leadership Steps In At Washburn Student Government Association
Vice President Ryan Durst and President Kate Coulter

Washburn University has officially entered a new chapter of student leadership. After months of preparation, campaigning, and transition, the Washburn Student Government Association (WSGA) welcomed President Kate Coulter and Vice President Ryan Durst to office on April 16.

The journey began on Feb. 5, when Coulter, a second-year Communication Studies major with a minor in Leadership Studies, and Ryan Durst, a senior Public Administration major minoring in Economics, announced their candidacy. The duo started an active campaign across campus, visiting 23 student organizations to share their platform and engage with students and gain feedback on the change they want to see.

Campaign season ended on March 17, and the Washburn student body responded at the polls. Out of 558 total votes, Coulter and Durst received 312 votes (55.9%), defeating opponents Trevor Ottman and Nick Llyod, who secured 246 votes (44.1%).

Shortly after the announcement of Presidency, Coulter and Durst began building their cabinet.

With only 7 available positions and 27 applications submitted, the process was competitive and fast-paced. All interviews were conducted within one week, leading to the appointment of the following team members: Kira Roth – Chief of Staff; Meredith Ginn – Budget Director; Taylor Redington – Campus and Community Affairs Director; Caleb Newfer – Legislative Research Director; Chavanna Kearny – Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Director; Belle Hammes – Marketing and Communication Director; Lillian Clark – Special Events Director.

The official transition period took place from April 4 to April 16, giving the outgoing and incoming administrations time to collaborate and ensure a smooth handoff. The new leadership was formally installed during the Transition of Power Ceremony on April 16 at 4:30 p.m. in the State Capitol.

Now officially in office, Coulter and Durst are set to begin their term focused on connection, representation, and meaningful student engagement.
