Greenwood County Volunteer Appreciation

The Greenwood County Extension office would like to thank all our incredible volunteers during National Volunteer Week! Their support, experience, and guidance are essential to delivering the high-quality programming we offer to community members and our 4-H youth. The Kansas 4-H program has about 4,196 volunteers who helped with activities in the most recent programming year. In Kansas, volunteers donate an average of 9 hours per month, which equals 37,764 volunteer hours annually. One of those volunteer hours is worth $33.49, totaling the monetary value for volunteers at $1.26 million. K-State Research and Extension reported that volunteers, across all programming areas, gave 309,345 hours of their time to programs carried out across the state. The equivalent value of that time is more than $8.8 million across the state and programs.

While data helps demonstrate the value of our volunteers, it can never fully reflect the passion and commitment they bring to K-State Research and Extension programs and 4-H youth.

Volunteers are the backbone of our community, donating their time, talents, and energy to support youth development and lifelong learning. Above all else, our volunteers help our youth gain leadership skills and values that will prepare them for their future careers and engrain the importance of community involvement.

Volunteers not only play a vital role in supporting youth through K-State Research and Extension’s 4-H program, but they also make a lasting impact on the communities where they live and work. Their contributions extend beyond the program itself, helping to create positive changes in community conditions. Volunteers strengthen communities in four key ways: by fostering resilience, building connections, improving overall well-being, and encouraging civic engagement. In addition to these community- wide benefits, research shows that 4-H volunteers also grow personally through their service. While many join to support youth and make a difference, they also gain valuable teaching, leadership, and communication skills that translate into their personal and professional lives.

Our dedicated Greenwood County volunteers include, but are by no means limited to the Extension Council, Program Development Committees, 4-H Foundation, 4-H Club and Project Leaders, 4-H Fair Judges, and County Fair Superintendents. Thank you for your support, dedication, time, and guidance that you impart to all K-State Research and Extension programs and 4-H youth in Greenwood County.
