Those present were John Bills, Dusty Booth, Kevin Hough, Lindamood, Dana Mills, Pitko, Rise Russin, Stan Skaer, Jan Stephens and Museum Director Robin Himes.
The minutes of the Feb. 4 board meeting were read. There were no changes or corrections. Mills moved to accept the minutes. Stephens seconded the motion. The motion passed.
Treasurer Kent Olson was not able to be at the meeting. Pitko shared information from an email Olson had sent.
It was decided to table discussion and voting on the treasurer’s report until Olson can be at the board meeting.
There were 17 visitors to the museum in February.
There were 80 visitors in March including members of the Sandwich Club Quilt Guild, Entre Nous and Community Benefit, as well as five students and one teacher from Hamilton High School.
Visitors were from Kansas, Iowa and Washington state.
There were no bills to be presented.
Himes shared that at the time of the meeting the group had received seven applications for the Barbara Robison Nicholas scholarship. (There were nine total applications submitted for the scholarship) Wooden shingles will be put on the school sometime this month.
Work will be done on the underneath areas of the school this month as well, replacing floor joists.
The windows have been ordered. Lindamood shared that she and Olson are continuing to look for additional funding for the Claycomb School Project through grants. Stephens shared that there is a DAR grant available that could be looked into.
Scholarship applications were discussed further. Hough, Mills and Lindamood will meet April 6 to read through the applications to make the decision about the recipient.
The group has received the required information from last year’s scholarship recipient and funds will be mailed to her.
The program on William Allen White was held March 31 with 32 people in attendance. The speaker was very well informed and gave a very interesting talk with audience participation following her presentation. It was mentioned that she had put in time to make sure there was information pertaining specifically to Greenwood County in her presentation. Bills and Rhodes will be giving a program at the end of May to the Severy alumni on schools in that area. Himes shared information about the new display featuring Atom Pop Popcorn, originally made in Quincy. The group has received new items including a letter signed by Orville Redenbacher and a letter from the American Popcorn Company. A box of slides was included in the donation. These show the production of the popcorn poppers. The group will look into getting prints made from them and post information about the display on Facebook, the website and possibly on the Legends of Kansas Facebook page. Mills suggested that we look for someone who could do a program on Atom Pop Popcorn and its history in Quincy.
Stephens shared that the next 5th Monday is June 5. Mills made a motion to have a 5th Monday program that evening. Bills seconded the motion. There will be a 5th Monday in September as well.
