Although a ruling could still be weeks away, the transcript of the October 2024 bench trial was filed in the Scott Cheever vs. State civil case last Friday, April 4.
The six day trial was held due to Cheever filing another appeal following his conviction in the 2005 death of Sheriff Matt Samuels.
Judge Mike Ward requested the transcript of those proceedings at the conclusion of the trial and noted that the case would reconvene after the transcripts of the trial had been completed.
When the court reconvenes in this case, it is believed that both Cheever’s attorneys and the state will present closing arguments. The judge will then begin judicial deliberation, which may take weeks or even months.
In March, one of Cheever’s Attorney’s, Julia S. Spainhour, submitted a “notice of withdrawal of appearance” which noted she was withdrawing as co-counsel in the matter as she was retiring. Paul Oller will continue to serve as Cheever’s attorney in this case.
As of Monday morning, a date had not been added to the portal.
