The City of Eureka recently received two Community Development Block Grants (CDBG)and were presented with CDBG funds totaling $282,867 and $416,000.
According to the first grant agreement, CDBG will provide funds towards a Community Development Program. The City of Eureka, for its share, must provide $85,290 in additional funds to be used toward the same program. It was noted that Eureka has already raised over half of the required funds. Donations, as well as an expected tax credit, will help in reaching the goal.
The second CDBG project plans to rehabilitate approximately nine homes occupied by qualifying low-to-moderate- income families, with seven owner-occupied homes and two rental units. The scope also includes the demolition of at least one vacant, dilapidated residential structure, enhancing neighborhood safety and preventing blight within the target area bounded by W. 3rd Street to the North, W. River Street to the South, S. Poplar Street to the West, and N. Oak Street to the East. Additionally, this grant will fund the reconstruction of approximately 740 linear feet of 1st Street, from Poplar to Sycamore, addressing drainage concerns that contribute to degraded pavement conditions. With an estimated project cost of $600,842.00, the grant request seeks $416,000.00, with a local match of $184,842.00 from the City of Eureka, landlord contributions, and the Kansas Weatherization Assistance Program.
The anticipated project timeline noted that in May, the city will publish and go through call for contractors for the projects, as well as request applications from those who submitted pre-applications.
Inspections are slated to begin this summer.
Construction completion is slated for October for the first group of houses and mid-April 2026 for the second group of houses.
If funding allows, inspections on additional housing units will be held in June 2026, with hopes of completing an additional round of housing units in September 2026.
