Water availability and access are a common topic among cattle producers in Southeast Kansas.
With recent years of drought conditions, efficient systems and maintaining our livestock watering options has been an important aspect of every farm and ranch management system. On Thursday, March 13, the K-State Research and Extension Southwind District and Greenwood County offices will be hosting a Livestock Watering Systems Tour south of Hamilton at the Collinge Ranch.
Attendees can plan to hear from Greenwood county rancher, Mike Collinge, Water Quality Specialist, Herschel George, and NRCS District Director, Luke Westerman. The tour and discussion will include a gravity flow water tank from a pond, a hardened limited water access to a pond, solar pump set up, water and cattle monitoring systems, and much more. Presenters will discuss their experiences with these systems, maintenance and installation tips and tricks, pros and cons to the different systems, when best to apply them to your operation, and Natural Resources Conservation Service and Watershed Restoration Protection Strategy (WRAPS) cost-share programs that aid producers in making these systems a reality for their operations.
The address for this tour will be 1834 230th St., Hamilton. Tour will start 1/2 mile west of Highway 99 on 230th Street. The group plans to gather at 1 p.m. with the tour to begin at approximately 1:30 p.m. in the pasture they gather at. From there they will move a couple miles west to continue with the educational afternoon and plan to wrap up around 4:30 p.m.
