Last Friday, Jan. 31, the Eureka Lady Tornadoes hosted the Fredonia Yellowjackets in yet another Tri-Valley League (TVL) match. It was the Winter Royalty game and the Lady Tornadoes did not disappoint. After holding the Yellowjackets to just seven points for nearly three quarters, Eureka secured their second TVL victory, 54-24.
Fredonia won the tip, but the team was unsuccessful in scoring. Laynie Winfrey secured the rebound and kicked the ball to Britta Mongeau, who was flying down the court for the fastbreak.
Mongeau drew the foul and knocked down a free throw. The Yellowjackets managed to go on a 5-0 run, but it was quickly put to rest after an offensive putback by Kimber Ptacek. Fredonia scored another two points inside the paint. Eureka continued firing off offensively and defensively in the first half, extending their lead to 37-7 after sixteen minutes.
The third quarter was much like the first and second; Eureka exploded offensively, while shutting down Fredonia’s attempts at shortening the scoring gap. By the end of the third, the Tornadoes had the 49-17 lead.
The Tornadoes cleared the bench early in the second half, allowing the Yellowjackets to shorten the lead ever so slightly. Elle Coulter contributed 8 points in the final two quarters and continued to be a pest defensively. After 32 minutes of play, the Tornadoes won in a landslide, 54-24, against the Yellowjackets, bringing their record to 9-3 and allotting them their second TVL victory.
