Patriots Competed At The SCBL; Boys Placed Fifth

The West Elk Patriots boys continued competition in the South Central Border League (SCBL) last week after qualifying over Caldwell on Saturday, Jan. 18.

West Elk, who were seeded eighth, faced Oxford, #1 seed, in the opening round and fell 47-74. The Patriots trailed 4-15 after the first and 20-35 at the intermission. With one-quarter remaining, West Elk trailed 39-53. Scoring for the Patriots were Maddex Moreno 18, Kase Kill 13, Garett Usry 8, Roman Moreno 4, and Trent Haag and Gage Cook each with 2.

The Patriots then faced Flinthills, #4 seed, in the first round of consolation. West Elk jumped out to an early 15-11 lead and continued the momentum in the next three quarters and won the game 50-36. Scoring for the Patriots were M. Moreno 20, Haag 15, Usry 9, R. Moreno 4 and Kill 2.

West Elk concluded the tournament with a victory over Argonia, 49-39, to claim fifth place. The Patriots claimed an early 11-9 lead in the first. West Elk doubled Argonia’s scoring efforts in the second adding 20 points to Argonia’s 10, to lead 31-19 at the intermission. The Patriots outscored Argonia in the third 15-13 and led 46-32 going into the final quarter. Despite having their lowest scoring in the fourth quarter, West Elk held on to a 49-39 victory. Scoring for the Patriots were M. Moreno 28, Usry 10, Jaren Gaston 5, R. Moreno 4 and Jaxson Bogdahn 2.

The Patriots are slated to travel to Udall this Friday, Jan. 31, at 4 p.m. The will then host Central on Tuesday, Feb. 4 before hosting Caldwell on Friday, Feb. 7 for their winter homecoming event.
