Eureka’s Junior High Basketball team had a full week with three nights of basketball.
Collectively, the Tornadoes went 9-6 for the week, capping off with a clean sweep against Galesburg last Thursday. Unfortunately, both varsity teams went 1-2 for the week, claiming their only wins against the Timberwolves of Galesburg.
Cherryvale
To kick off the week, the Tornadoes hosted the Chargers of Cherryvale where Eureka went 3-2 on Monday, Jan. 13.
The Tornado A-team boys went basket for basket with the Chargers in the first and were tied at 8. Eureka claimed the edge in the second to lead 14-11 at halftime. But, the lead was cut short as the Chargers outscored the Tornadoes in the next two quarters and Eureka fell, 38-42. Scoring for Eureka were Cash Escareno 9, Tate Scott and Eli Mason each with 7, Christian Sanchez 5, Maddox Hughes and Dylan Conard each with 3 and Wacey Ross and JaKolby Robbins each with 2.
Just one basket separated the Lady Tornadoes from the Chargers in A-team action, with Eureka falling 16-18. The Lady Tornadoes trailed 4-10 after the first and 6-10 at halftime. Eureka continued to struggle in the third, adding just one point to trail 7-16 going into the final quarter. Eureka’s best scoring quarter was in the fourth as they were chasing the victory and added 9 points in the final stanza. Scoring for the Lady Tornadoes were Annabell Bogle 8, Amorette Guillaume and Bella Damron each with 3 and Andee Weatherby 2.
Eureka’s B-team boys started strong against the Chargers, claiming a 9-2 lead after the first. The Tornadoes doubled their points in the second, again scoring 9 to lead at half, 18-4. Eureka found double digits in both the third and fourth quarters, 12 and 10 respectively to win the game 40-16. Scoring for Eureka were Cord Adkins 10, Donovan Owings 8, Gavin Gonzales 6, Conard 5, Felix Neill 4, Henry Lindamood 3 and Liam Mead and Donald Baker each with 2.
The Lady Tornadoes B-team had an 8-6 lead over the Chargers after the first but, were unable to score in the second and lost the lead. Eureka was down 8-12 at halftime but quickly claimed the lead and never looked back. Eureka led 15-14 after three and won the game 27-14. Scoring for the Tornadoes were Kinsley Cox 8, Wenonah Welsh 7, Weatherby and McKenna McDonald each with 4 and Alivia Hare and Brielle Thompson each with 2.
In C-team boy action, the Tornadoes were able to play a full game and claimed a 26-14 victory. Eureka trailed 2-6 after the first but dominated the second to claim a 14-6 victory going in at halftime. Despite the Chargers doubling their points in the third, the Tornadoes maintained a 19-12 lead and won the game 26-14. Scoring for Eureka were Owings 11, Lindamood 7, Gonzales 6 and Cooper Wunderlich 2.
At Caney
The Tornadoes A-team boys got off to a slow start against the Bullpups, trailing 4-10 after the first and 9-14 at halftime. With one quarter remaining, Eureka trailed 15-25. The Tornadoes lost the game 19-31. Scoring for Eureka were Mason 6, Scott 5, Escareno and Ross each with 3 and Sanchez 2.
The Lady Tornado A-team struggled to get baskets to fall against the Bullpups. Eureka trailed 0-5 after the first, 2-7 at halftime and 4-17 going into the final stanza. Eureka lost the game, 11-22. Scoring for Eureka were Damron 7 and Bogle 4.
Eureka’s B-team boys were stifled by the Bullpups, trailing 5-21 after the first. The struggle continued in the second as the Tornadoes were unable to get a basket in the second and trailed 5-29 at halftime. Eureka had their best scoring quarter in the third, adding 8 but, trailed 13-40 with one quarter remaining. The Tornadoes again went scoreless in the fourth. The score was 13-47 as the final buzzer sounded. Scoring for Eureka were Adkins 5, Neill 4 and Conard and Henry Perrier with 2 each.
Eureka’s B-team ladies took the Bullpups to overtime in a 21-18 victory. Eureka maintained the score by quarter with 1-2 point margins in the first three quarters before tying Caney at 17 in the final quarter of regulation. Both teams would make several attempts from the penalty stripe, with Eureka outscoring the Bullpups in overtime, 3-1 to claim the win. Scoring for the Tornadoes were Weatherby 10, Kaylee Palmer 4, McDonald 3 and Cox and Thompson each with 2.
The Tornado C-team played two quarters at Caney, only adding one basket in the first, trailing the Bulldogs 2-7. Eureka lost the game 2-16. Scoring for the Tornadoes was Donald Baker 2. Galesburg
The Tornadoes made a clean sweep of things to wrap up the week last Thursday, Jan. 16, as all five teams claimed the victory over the Timberwolves.
Eureka’s A-team boys claimed the lead in the first quarter, 8-6; but fell behind in the second to trail 12-13 at halftime. Eureka dominated in the second half, scoring 14 in the third and 19 in the fourth to win the game, 45-24. Scoring for Eureka were Maddox Hughes 12, Cash Escareno 10, Wacey Ross 7, Tate Scott 6, Eli Mason 4 and Christian Sanchez, JaKolby Robbins and Henry Perrier all with 2.
The lady Tornadoes A-team went scoreless in the first, but that didn’t stop them from dominating the second quarter to lead 10-1 at halftime. Eureka held the Timberwolves scoreless in the second half and added two baskets of their own to win the game 14-1. Scoring for Eureka were McDonald 5, Abbi Foth 4, Guillaume and Weatherby each with 2 and Cox 1.
Eurekas B-team boys claimed an early 4-0 lead. The momentum continued into the second with the Tornadoes leading 16-2 at halftime. Only one basket counted in the third and it decreased the gap to 16-4. Eureka came together in the fourth to increase their lead and won the game, 269. Scoring for Eureka were Ross 8, Hughes, Gonzales, Adkins and Perrier all with 4 and Owings 2.
The Lady Tornadoes B-team trailed 7-8 at halftime but turned the tables in the third to lead by one, 13-12, to enter the fourth quarter. Eureka maintained the momentum and won the game 18-16. Scoring for Eureka were Alivia Hare 6, Weatherby 5, Welsh 4, Palmer 2 and Cox 1.
Eureka’s C-team boys game might have been the most exciting game of the evening as the team came together to win in overtime. The Tornadoes trailed by two after the first, 2-4 and the second, 8-10; but, came out at halftime to lead 14-12 going into the final quarter. Both teams finished the fourth quarter at 16 and began a back-and-forth three-minute overtime session. Eureka added three to clinch the victory, 19-16. Scoring for Eureka were Asher Euler 5, Gonzales and Henry Lindamood each with 4, and Neill and Baker with 2.
