Moreno Claimed 1,000th Career Point

West Elk senior Maddex Moreno joined the 1,000 career point club last week, scoring 75 points in three games.

Moreno led the Patriots in all three games. He scored 31 against Cedar-Vale/Dexter on Tuesday, Jan. 14; scored 25 on Friday, Jan. 17 against South Haven and scored 19 on Saturday, Jan. 18 against Caldwell.

CedarVale/Dexter

The Patriots were victorious over the Spartens of CedarVale/Dexter. West Elk claimed a 17-7 lead after the first, and although they were outscored 6-10 in the second quarter, the Patriots led at halftime 2317. West Elk would score double digits in the next two quarters and claimed the game 52-40. Scoring for the Patriots were Moreno 31, Garrett Usry 9, Kase Kill 8 and Peyton Fetcher and Trent Haag each with 2.

South Haven

West Elk claimed an early 20-13 lead over South Haven and continued the momentum through the next three quarters. The Patriots led 42-24 after the second and 53-39 after three. West Elk won the game, 65-48. Scoring for the Patriots were Moreno 25, Kill 12, Fechter 11, Jacen Gaston 9 and Haag and Usry each with 4.

Caldwell

In the South Central Border League (SCBL) play-in game, the Patriots again scored double digits in all four quarters to claim the victory. West Elk, seeded 8th, claimed a 12-4 lead after the first and continued to outscore Caldwell throughout the game. At halftime, the Patriots led 25-14 and were up 43-23 going into the final quarter. West Elk won the game 5631. Scoring for the Patriots were Moreno 19, Usry 16, Kill 5, Haag 4, Gaston and Jaxon Bogdahn each with 3 and Fechter and Jared Tucker each with 2.

Next Up

With the victory over Caldwell, the Patriots were slated to face CedarVale/ Dexter on Monday, Jan. 20. The winner will advance to semi-final action on Thursday, Jan. 23, at 8:30 p.m.

Details regarding the Lady Patriots games were unavailable at the time of publication. The Lady Patriots are seeded 6th in the SCBL and were slated to face Flinthills on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
