Loren Henry Wools, Jr.

Loren Henry Wools, Jr. of Eureka, a man who could lay carpet as flawlessly as he served his country, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at St. Francis Hospice, in Wichita, at the age of 80. Loren was born March 21, 1944, in Topeka, the son of Loren Henry and Agnes P (Crouch) Wools. His Topeka roots ran deep and he graduated from Washburn Rural High School in 1962, leaving his mark on the school’s athletic scene.

Loren’s patriotism bloomed early. Just a few months after graduation, on June 6, 1962, Loren enlisted in the Army where he served with Company C, 3rd Battalion, 1st Tank Brigade in Fort Jackson, S.C. Loren’s dedication led him to serve 3 tours of duty in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged June 4, 1965, receiving the Air Medal and Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for his service.

Following his military service, Loren settled his family in Bartlesville, Okla. where his entrepreneurial spirit took root. His passion in business was flooring and he became a fixture in the flooring industry, owning and operating a successful trio of flooring stores. In 1992, he sold the business and moved his family to Eureka. Once the family was settled, he started a carpet installation and cleaning business. With a twinkle in his eye, Loren often joked about gracing “just about every house and business in town” with his expertise.

Loren’s dedication extended beyond his business. In 1994, he took on the role of Fiance Commissioner, serving the City of Eureka with the same diligence he brought to everything he did. Finally, in 2005, Loren decided to hang up his tools and enjoy a well-deserved retirement.

He will be deeply missed by his son Loren H. Wools III and wife Shannon of Eureka; two grandsons; a brother, Le Roy Wools of Topeka; a sister, Cindy Kenyon of Oklahoma; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Loren and Agnes Wools and a daughter, Larisa Jean (Wools) Oldfather.

Cremation has taken place and a private family service will take place later.

Loren leaves behind a legacy of service, both to his country and his community.
